Intentional interior lighting design can completely transform a space. You can have a beautifully designed room, but if the lighting isn’t right, the entire space can fall flat. Each room has different lighting needs depending on its function, and understanding this is key to creating a space that feels both beautiful and functional.
Start With the Purpose of the Room
Before choosing lighting, think about what the room is primarily used for. A bathroom, for example, needs bright, even lighting for getting ready, doing makeup, and styling hair. In contrast, a dining room benefits from warm, ambient lighting that highlights the dining table and creates a cozy atmosphere. An office will require focused task lighting over a desk and bookshelves. Each space demands a thoughtful approach.
Interior Lighting Design Can Be an Investment—but It’s Worth It
One thing that often surprises clients is how expensive lighting can be. The range in pricing is vast, and high-quality fixtures—especially hardwired ones like chandeliers and sconces—can add up quickly. But when you get the lighting right from the start, you rarely have to change it. (Lamps are the exception—every room needs at least one, and they’re fun to move around!)
Room-by-Room Lighting Design Favorites
Let’s talk about some of my favorite interior lighting design ideas for different rooms:
Kitchen: Most kitchens have overhead lighting, but my favorite kitchen lighting is actually a lamp. Yes, a lamp in the kitchen. I love coming down early in the morning to a soft glow while making coffee. Whether it’s a small accent lamp or something larger, it instantly warms up the space.
Dining Room: A chandelier is standard for interior lighting design, but layering in other light sources—like picture lights over artwork—adds visual interest. When it’s dark out (which happens so early here in Michigan!), that extra glow gives the room warmth and lets your art shine. If you’re hosting a dinner party, guests have more to look at than just their plate.
Living Room: This is where layered lighting design really shines. Table lamps, floor lamps, maybe some sconces—it’s all about creating different moods. I always tell clients that overhead lighting alone makes a room feel flat.
Bedroom: While bedside lamps are the norm, I often recommend sconces on either side of the bed. They’re beautiful, save space, and are perfect for reading without being too bright. They also prevent the dreaded knock-over-the-lamp scenario, especially in smaller bedrooms.

Budget-Friendly Sconce Hack: Rechargeable Bulbs
As much as I love hardwired sconces, they can be pricey—especially when you factor in electrician costs. My favorite workaround? Rechargeable light bulbs. If you follow Nesting With Grace, you’ve probably seen the puck light trick. This is a more recent upgrade: rechargeable “bulbs” that screw into any standard socket. They attach magnetically, can be charged via USB, and work with a button or remote. Amazon has a variety of sizes and styles available, and when they’re installed, you honestly can’t tell they aren’t hardwired.
I recently used this as an interior lighting design trick in a little girl’s room here in Kalamazoo: we installed regular sconces, popped in rechargeable bulbs, and now she can turn her light on with a remote or the button on the bulb. No electrician, no cords—just beautiful, functional lighting.

Quick Lighting Mistakes I See All the Time
After working with clients throughout Southwest Michigan, I’ve noticed some common lighting mistakes:
- Relying only on overhead lights (this creates harsh shadows!)
- Choosing fixtures that are way too small for the space
- Forgetting about dimmer switches—they’re game changers
- Not thinking about how natural light changes throughout the day
Smart Lighting and Energy Savings
LED bulbs have come such a long way, and they’re worth the investment. They last forever and the light quality is so much better than it used to be. Plus, with our Michigan winters being so long and dark, having lights you can dim and adjust throughout the day really helps.
Smart bulbs are fun too—you can set them to gradually brighten in the morning or dim for movie night. It sounds fancy, but they’re actually pretty affordable now.
Questions I Get Asked About Interior Lighting Design:
How much does good lighting cost? It really depends on what you’re doing! You can make a huge difference with just some new lamps and LED bulbs, or you can go all out with custom fixtures. I always tell people to start with what bothers them most and work from there.
Do I need an electrician for everything? Not at all! Obviously for hardwired stuff like chandeliers, yes. But there are so many plug-in options now, plus those rechargeable bulbs I mentioned. You’d be surprised how much you can change without calling an electrician.
What’s the best lighting for small spaces? Wall sconces are your friend—they don’t take up floor space. Mirrors help bounce light around too. And honestly? Sometimes one really good floor lamp does more than a bunch of little lights.
My open concept home feels like a cave. Help? This is so common! The trick is creating zones with different types of lighting. Pendant lights over the kitchen island, a chandelier over the dining table, lamps in the living area. Each area needs its own “moment” but they should all feel connected.
Any tips for our long Michigan winters? Warm, cozy lighting is everything during those dark months. I’m talking table lamps, candles, anything that creates that hygge feeling. Overhead lights just don’t cut it when it’s dark by 5 PM.
I’m on a tight budget. Where should I start? Lamp shades and bulbs! You’d be amazed what new shades can do, and switching to good LED bulbs makes everything look better. Hit up some thrift stores—you can find great lamp bases and just update the shades.
Do you work with people outside of Kalamazoo? Absolutely! I work with clients throughout Southwest Michigan—Portage, Mattawan, Parchment, you name it. Lighting problems are the same everywhere, right?
Lighting doesn’t have to be intimidating or overly expensive. With a little creativity and thoughtful planning, you can layer light in a way that feels custom, cozy, and completely you. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed? That’s what I’m here for.
